"My mother's marriage was romantic" (as written in a letter from Chloe Emma to her nehew Edward R Sargent in 1912). Jane was very attractive and had many suitors. Curtis was not in favor with Jane's mother (Chloe) because he was poor. As a dutiful daughter Jane tried to love the man her mother liked. However, Curtis was handsome and determined to win her, which he did and that is why the liscence was safe in his pocket some days before the marriage. It was some time before her mother forgave and forgot, but she ended up liking Curtis very much.1
Curtis Lewis was a cotton merchant.2 He and Jane Gardner Collier appeared on the 1860 US Federal Census of Griffin, Spalding County, Georgia, enumerated 9 June 1860, reporting a personal estate for Jane of $2,000. Their children Mary Jane, Chloe Emma and Caroline Craft were listed as living with them.2 Curtis Lewis died on 19 June 1882 in Atlanta, Georgia, at age 81.
