Greenough Townsend was born on 4 March 1895, in NY.2 Greenough grew up in Townsend Place, Oyster Bay, Long Island, NY.3 1916 he was sent to Parris Island with a bunch of fellow officer candidates where no-one quite knew what to do with them. So they cleaned latrines and dumped oyster shells onto the entrance roads, some miles from where they loaded up the buckets of shells. Then they were commissioned--with no formal or useful training--and he served as a communications officer as part of the Marine detachment aboard a four-stacker destroyer.4 He graduated from Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, in 1918.3 He was in the Marine Corps.3 He married Rachel Caroline Maxtone Graham on Sunday, 29 August 1926 in Rosslyn Chapel, near Edinburgh, Scotland, Rosslyn Chapel has recently (2009) become famous due to the book The DaVinci Code.5,3 Greenough lived in New York City, NY, at 1 Beekman Place.3 He was employed by the United States Line in various office jobs, until his retirement.3 23 August 1929 Oyster Bay Social Notes, Oyster Bay, L. I., Aug. 23—
Mr. and Mrs. Edward M. Townsend and Greenough Townsend will sail on the Minnewaska tomorrow for Scotland. They will go to Ardblair Castle, near Perth, to join Mrs. Greenough Townsend and her son and parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Maxtone Graham. Mr. and Mrs. Greenough Townsend will return in September and Mr and Mrs. E. M. Townsend will return later.
---from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.3 "Apart from classical music, it was hard to see what he and Rachel had in common among their tastes and interests; but it was a happy marriage. When Greenough retired from United States Lines, they found that they could no longer afford to live in New York, especially with medical bills to pay. So they uprooted themselves, and settled at Windsor, one reason being that they would still be able to see their American friends coming and going through Heathrow Airport... Rachel taught Greenough to do needlework, and I (Robert Maxtone-Graham) have one of the chairs worked by him, beautifully done."3 He died on 10 October 1962 at 2 Queen's Terrace in Windsor, Berkshire, England, at age 67.6,3

Dates using 'say' are educated guesses by me.
If I don't know a female last name she will be identified with a 'Mrs' and her husband's name.
MALE or FEMALE means I don't know the first name.
