John probably settled in Exeter in early life. He was called "the worshipful Mr. John Marshall." He was a Baliff in Exeter in 1601, sheriff in 1609, mayor in 1615, retaining afterwards the position of alderman. He died circa 1624 in St Mary Arches, Exeter, England. He was buried on 18 August 1624.
