Henry David Thoreau was born on 12 July 1817, in Concord, MA.1 He was an American author, naturalist, transcendentalist, tax resister, development critic, and philosopher who is best known for Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay, Civil Disobedience, an argument for individual resistance to civil government in moral opposition to an unjust state.2 He died on 6 May 1862 in Concord, MA, at age 44.1
