Humphrey Atherton

     Humphrey Atherton was born say 1599.1 He married Mary Wales say 1624.1 Humphrey Atherton immigrated on the ship Humphrey arrived in Boston the the ship "James" with his wife and children. They sailed from Preston, Lancashire, England. The family was an old one in Lancashire. They settled in Dorchester. on 7 August 1635 to Dorchester, MA. Humphrey Atherton was called Major-General. He was killed by a fall from his horse while reviewing the militia on Boston Common.2 He died on 17 September 1661 in Dorchester, MA, Mr. Savage and the inscription on his tombstone say, that he died on the 16th, but other authority (MS Memorandum of Capt John Hull, made at the time and preserved among the Sewall papers. The Boston records also say Sep 17th) , and incontrovertible, says, on the "17th at about 1 o'clock, after midnight."2 He was buried at the North Burial Ground in Dorchester, MA.
