  • She wrote short stories, poetry and novels. Her novels were Anne (1880-1881), For the Major (1882), East Angels (1885), Jupiter Lights (1889) and Horace Chase (1893.)2
  • She had a 'personal attachment' to Henry James, which wasn't reciprocated, and fell into a depression.2
  • She died on 24 January 1894 in Venice, Italy, at age 53.1,2
  • She had influenza and depression. She either jumped or fell out of the 4th story window of her apartment on the Grand Canal.2
  • She was buried in Protestant Cemetery, Rome, Italy.2
  • She is memorialized by Anne's Tablet, which is on Mackinac Island, Michigan. Constance used to summer on the island. She published her first short stories based on experiences from her summer vacation home. The tablet was a gift from Samuel Mather, a successful iron ore mineowner and nepher of Constance. The sculptor was William Ordway Partridge, from New York.2
