Obituary Notice

An obituary was published

Clark Quincy Howland passed away on 5/19/14 at Rutland Regional Medical Center surrounded by his loving family and friends after a long illness.

He was born in Rutland on May 29, 1951 to Gilbert Bush and Elaine (Jensen) Howland.

He graduated from Rutland High School in 1969. During his youth, Clark was very active in the Boy Scouts. He attended many camps over Lake Sunrise and also attended the National Boy Scout Camp in Phil Mont, New Mexico.

On May 27, 1977 he married Judi Cioffi at St. Peters Church in Rutland.

In November of 1969 Clark enlisted in the Army. He was stationed in Vietnam from 1971 until 1972. Upon his discharge from the Army, he went to work at the Vermont Transit Bus Company. He drove the daily van trip from Rutland to Albany NY. When his health started failing him, and he could no longer drive the van, he worked behind the counter selling tickets and checking baggage. He could always be seen out in front of the bus station loading and unloading the buses. When he could no longer work because of his disability, he became very involved with the fellow Vietnam Veterans in Rutland and surrounding areas. Together they worked and organized the 1st Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America. They worked together to start up the Veterans Assistance Office to assist veterans filing claims to receive benefits to which they were entitled. Clark was very passionate about this program and spent countless hours volunteering his time and talents to help all veterans seeking help with their claims. He worked closely with the late congressman James Jeffords' office, both here in Vermont and Washington D.C. In 1990, together with this same group of Veterans and with the help of grant that Clark helped write, they purchased and renovated a house on Crescent Street that is known as the Dodge House. This was a home that was set up for Veterans who were in rehab to come and stay and receive help finding jobs and apartments so they could be independent and become a part of their community again. Clark was treasurer of the VVA Chapter 1 for many years. He received several awards for his service and dedication to his fellow veterans. He was also very involved in the planning of the Vietnam memorials both here in Rutland on Main Street Park, as well as the Rest Area Exit in Sharon VT on interstate 89. Clark's fellow veterans had three words to describe him, Beyond the call.

Clark enjoyed spending time with his family and friends; he especially looked forward to his summer vacations to Palermo, Maine on Sheepscot Lake. He was proud to be the youngest member of the Palermo Maine Gang.

Clark was an avid leader and loved the game show Jeopardy. He loved the game of football as well being a big fan of MSJ football, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame and the New England Patriots.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 31, the Disabled American Veterans and the Vets helping Vets program to which he was named Honorary Board of Director member.

Clark is survived by his wife, Judi, his son, Matthew, his wife Alicia and his beautiful grandson Aiden.

He is also survived by his three brothers, Roger Howland and his wife Betsy of Shelburne VT, his twin brother Christopher Howland and his wife Cecile of Rutland Town, Gordon Howland of Rutland, his sister Alana Howland of Malden, MA, a sister in law, Debbie Howland of Chippenhook VT and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial Donations may be made to the Open Door Mission Veterans Program, 31 Park Street, Rutland VT, or RAVNAH PO Box 787, Rutland VT 05701-0787.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Christ the King Church.

Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. A reception will follow the graveside service.

Friends may call at the Clifford Funeral Home on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m.
