Obituary Notice
An obituary was published
William Claire Knudsen (aka Bill Knudsen), formerly of Alpine, Ut and Monte Sereno, Ca, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2022 in South Jordan, Utah.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 74 years, Ruth (Crandall) Knudsen; 4 children -Linda Maddox, Ruthanne Kokkonen, Guy William Knudsen, and Grant Lee Knudsen; 15 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.
He was born to Julia (Brown) Knudsen and Nels William Knudsen in his childhood home at 430 South 300 West in Provo, Utah on December 12, 1925. He was the third of five children. At his passing, he was 96 years of age.
William, also called by the name Bill by friends and family, spent all of his childhood and teen years in the home of his birth. His father and mother were older when they married: aged 40 and 34 respectively. William wrote in his memoirs that his parents 'loved their children and devoted their lives to them'. However, he also noted that his father, Nels, 'did not tolerate nonsense in his children'. His mother was 'gentle and tender with her children and was the most directly involved in William's upbringing'. His childhood interests were in erector sets, model airplanes, and anything that had switches and could be controlled remotely. He showed an early aptitude for mathematics; and, his father being musical of nature, William naturally developed many musical abilities such as playing violin, singing, and directing. Another life-long activity he learned from his father was gardening which became his regular go-to after a long day's work.
Right after his graduation from Provo High School, William entered the army and served in World War II until discharged in 1946. While in the Army, he served as Wire Chief in Manilla and was also in Okinawa. These years in the military had a great positive impact on William. He had never been away from home prior to serving, and during his service he learned very valuable lessons about life. He also studied the scriptures thoroughly during this time and was faithful in his church attendance and service throughout the remainder of his life.
Upon his return home after his military service, William attended Brigham Young University where he graduated with high honors. Rather than pursue an earlier interest in engineering, William decided to study Physics. During his years at BYU, he met and fell in love with Ruth Crandall who was, in his words, "beautiful, poised, and a good conversationalist". They were married on August 31, 1948 in the Salt Lake City temple. Upon graduation from college, William and Ruth moved to Madison, Wisconsin where he earned his PH.D in Physics with an emphasis in mathematics.
William had a long and distinguished professional career. After an early stint with Standard Oil of California, he worked for Lockheed Space and Missiles Corp. in Palo Alto, California, after which he formed his own corporation named Knudsen Geophysical Corporation where he contracted out with NASA. His interests focused on space research and specialized in the ionosphere. His most notable achievement was being appointed by NASA to be the Chief Investigator for the development of an instrument that was launched into space May of 1978 to orbit planet Venus and collect scientific data. The name of this instrument was ORPA and its purpose was to measure the physical properties of the Venus ionosphere. This instrument was mounted on the NASA Pioneer Venus spacecraft and functioned successfully for 14 years. At the age of 90, William wrote his last article which was published in a scientific journal using data from this instrument.
William was a man of integrity and was a loyal husband and father. He was extremely knowledgeable and accomplished in all things space and physics related and retained that interest and knowledge until he passed. Throughout his long and productive life, he continued to use his musical talent for the benefit of others and served in his faith when called. He will be sadly missed by all those who loved and knew him.
