Richard Maxwell Sargent, Jr. died of cancer at Morristown Memorial Hospital on Friday, December 16, 2005. He was born in Orange, NJ, grew up in Montclair, and was a resident of Chatham Township, NJ. Richard graduated from Governor Dummer Academy in Byfield, MA, and later graduated from Yale University in 1957 with a BS degree. He served in the US Army from 1958 - 1961.

After his discharge from the U.S. Army, Mr. Sargent was employed by Chubb Corp., where he worked for his entire career. He held various executive positions, including management of the departments of Operations and Personal Lines, as well as the International Division. His final 15 years with Chubb were as President and CEO of the Chubb Institute, later to become Chubb Computer Services. He retired in 2001.

Mr. Sargent was an avid golfer and belonged to Canoe Brook Country Club, where he was Senior Men's Champion in 1991 and 2004. He also belonged to New Seabury Golf Club on Cape Cod in Massachusetts, and Bonita Bay Club in Bonita Springs, Florida. He was an enthusiastic outdoorsman and skier who ran several marathons, including New York and Boston, enjoyed many helicopter, skiing and backpacking trips with his son, bicycle trips, including the AIDS bicycle ride from NY to Boston with his daughter, and numerous canoeing trips with his wife.

Mr. Sargent was enthusiastic in everything he did, and he will be sorely missed by his wife, his children, and his many friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Stanley Congregational Church, 94 Fairmount Ave., Chatham, for Richard Maxwell Sargent Jr. of Chatham Township, who died Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at Morristown Memorial Hospital of cancer. Born in Orange, he grew up in Montclair and was a resident of Chatham Township. Mr. Sargent worked in various executive positions with the Chubb Corporation, Warren Township, including management of the departments of Operations and Personal Lines and the International Division. In his last 15 years with the company, he was president and chief operating officer of the Chubb Institute, Parsippany. He retired in 2001. He was a graduate of Governor Dummer Academy in Byfield, Mass., and Yale University, New Haven, Conn. An Army veteran, he served from 1958 to 1961. An avid golfer, Mr. Sargent was a member of the Canoe Brook Country Club, Summit, where he was Senior Men’s Champion in 1991 and 2004. He also was a member of the New Seabury Golf Club in Cape Cod, Mass., and the Bonita Bay Club in Bonita Springs, Fla. He took part in the New York and Boston marathons and an AIDS benefit bicycle ride from New York to Boston with his daughter. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Ann M. Sargent; his son, Richard M. Sargent III of Los Altos, Calif.; his daughter, Louisa B. Sargent of the Basking Ridge section of Bernards Township, and a sister, Marcia Hider of Seabrook Island, S.C. Interment was private. Arrangements were by the Wm. A. Bradley and Son Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Chatham.
